Schalke drop duo

Schalke have dropped wantaway duo Peter Lovenkrands and Albert Streit from their first team squad.

Both players have been told that they will not be considered for Bundesliga action for the rest of the season and will now train with the club's reserves.

"This decision was a purely sporting one," Schalke general manager Andreas Muller commented.

"Both players have said in the past that they want to leave Schalke.

"We need a squad in which every player is prepared to fully concentrate on Schalke and whose thoughts are not elsewhere," he added.

Meanwhile Muller also revealed that the Royal Blues have released Uruguay international midfielder Gustavo Varela from his contract.

The 30-year-old's recent career has been blighted by injury and he has not played for the club this season.

"It is best for both sides to part now," Muller said
