Amelie Mauresmo was able to defeat Jelena Dokic in a tight first round encounter at the Brisbane International.

Mauresmo, a former world number one and winner of two Grand Slam singles titles, recovered from two set points to win the tiebreak in the first before taking another tiebreak in the second set.

This was the first chance for Mauresmo to apply any technique or tactical changes she has picked up from working with new coach Hugo Lecoq.

"It was a tough first match, she was playing some good tennis and gave me a bit of trouble. But there were good things." Mauresmo said.

"Physically I felt good on the court. That's a key point for me. I'm not at my top, but I'm feeling better than last year already. It's a matter of getting some wins to get the confidence back."
