Van Bommel unhappy with offer

Bayern Munich captain Mark van Bommel has admitted that he is unhappy with the club's offer of a one-year contract extension.

Speaking at the Bundesliga champions' winter training camp in Dubai, van Bommel hinted that he could now leave the Allianz Arena in the summer.

"I have asked for time to think things over until the end of January - and I intend to do just that," the Dutchman told Bild am Sonntag.

"There is a tendency, but I don't want to say more about it at the moment.

"I would like to stay, but one year is not much for a player who will be 32 soon.

"Therefore I am unhappy with the offer. My wishes are quite different."

Van Bommel, who has been linked to a move to Bundesliga rivals Hamburg, admitted that he had yet to receive offers from elsewhere.

"But clubs don't yet know that I might be up for grabs. When they do, I'm sure a few will be in touch," he said.

Okubo set for Wolfsburg

Japan international Yoshito Okubo is set to join VFL Wolfsburg, according to his club Vissel Kobe.

The 26 year-old has reportedly agreed terms with the Bundesliga outfit and will link up with compatriot Makoto Hasebe at the Volkswagen Arena once he passes a medical on Sunday.

Details of the transfer have not been disclosed to the public, but Kobe confirmed an agreement had been struck between the two parties.

"The two clubs reached an agreement in monetary terms on Okubo's transfer to Wolfsburg late on Wednesday night," the club said in an official statement to the local press.

The move presents another opportunity for the talented striker to prove himself in Europe after a disappointing spell with Spain's Real Mallorca in 2005 and 2006.

Wolfsburg are expected to unveil their new signing sometime next week.Yoshito Okubo Japan international

Andreasen eyes Fulham exit

Fulham midfielder Leon Andreasen has spoken of his desire to leave Craven Cottage in the transfer window just a year after signing for the club.

The Denmark international was signed for 2million in January last year from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.

Andreasen has been left disappointed with his spell in West London having featured just five times off the bench in the Premier League this season.

The 25-year-old has attracted attention from German clubs Borussia Dortmund and Hannover with both clubs said to have been interested before he moved to Fulham.

"The manager prefers to play others instead, and I have to fully accept that," Andreasen told Danish paper DR Sporten.

"But then I expect from the manager that he doesn't block my future when I have the chance to further my career elsewhere.

Streit hits back at Schalke

Albert Streit has reacted angrily after being told that he is no longer part of Schalke's first-team squad.

Streit, Peter Lovenkrands and Carlos Grossmuller were told over the weekend they would not be considered for Bundesliga action for the rest of the season and would have to train with the reserves.

Streit has now hit back at the club, slamming the treatment he has received since arriving from Eintracht Frankfurt last January.

"I have done nothing, and they are telling me on Sunday that I am surplus to requirements and do not have the right to change clothes in the locker room. That's just about the limit," the midfielder said in an interview with the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper.

"I have lost the joy to play football at Schalke. I have always been ignored and given the go-by since joining from Frankfurt."

Streit is keen to play more regularly but admits it could be difficult to resolve the dispute quickly.

Speaking about the prospect of joining another club on lower wages, Streit said: "I have forwarded the issue to my agent Klaus Gerster.

"We will now decide how to go on, but I am clearly getting into a dispute. I still have three-and-a-half years left on my contract and I am paid well, but being a professional footballer has always been my dream.

"If I am not able to be a professional now, this would be quite bitter. But there are worse things in life than being sent to reserve-team football.

Schalke drop duo

Schalke have dropped wantaway duo Peter Lovenkrands and Albert Streit from their first team squad.

Both players have been told that they will not be considered for Bundesliga action for the rest of the season and will now train with the club's reserves.

"This decision was a purely sporting one," Schalke general manager Andreas Muller commented.

"Both players have said in the past that they want to leave Schalke.

"We need a squad in which every player is prepared to fully concentrate on Schalke and whose thoughts are not elsewhere," he added.

Meanwhile Muller also revealed that the Royal Blues have released Uruguay international midfielder Gustavo Varela from his contract.

The 30-year-old's recent career has been blighted by injury and he has not played for the club this season.

"It is best for both sides to part now," Muller said

Inter Milan and Barcelona were both victorious in Italy and Spain respecitvely, while Celtic, Lyon and Real all suffered defeats.

Serie A

League leaders Inter Milan continued their impressive march at the top as they triumphed at Lazio, with the powerful Zlatan Ibrahimovic among the goals. Juventus ensured they remain within six points of Jose Mourinho's charges, as Amauri's 89th-minute winner claimed the spoils versus Lecce.

AC Milan sit level on points with Juve after Kaka struck the only goal of the game against Catania, while Roma's resurgence after a torrid beginning to the campaign continued as they made it four straight wins with success at Chievo. Elsewhere, Udinese slumped to a fifth consecutive loss and Fiorentina made light work of Torino.

Hamburg eye Podolski

Hamburg have confirmed their interest in Bayern Munich's wantaway striker Lukas Podolski.

The German international, who has been linked with Manchester City and Tottenham, could be used in a deal to bring Ivica Olic to Munich early.

Olic, currently with Hamburg, has signed a pre-contract with Bayern and they are now looking to get him during the current window.

It is claimed a deal could be struck which sees Podolski moving in the opposite direction and Hamburg have admitted their interest in getting him.

"It's true, Lukas Podolski is a transfer option for us, " Hamburg general manager Dietmar Beiersdorfer, who met with Bayern Munich general manager Uli Hoeness in Dubai, confirmed to Bild.

Meanwhile, Podolski himself insists he wants his future sorting as soon as possible.

"I want a decision on my future as soon as possible," he told Bild.

"One way or another, I would like to have it decided before the end of January."Lukas Podolski Bayern Munich

Barca deny interest in Eto'o

Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o is attracting interest from the likes of Manchester City and Inter according to reports in Spain.

Eto'o has been in scintillating form this season scoring 18 goals in 20 games in all competitions helping to fire Barca 11 points clear at the top of the Primera Division.

Reports in the Catalan press believe that City are ready to launch a bid in the region of 60million Euros (55million) during the transfer window and are set to offer the player a contract of up to 12million Euros (11million) a year.

Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan have also been linked with the 27-year-old but the club have been quick to play down any move.

Transfer tips

Former Liverpool defender Jan Kromkamp, ex-Newcastle centre-back Jean-Alain Boumsong and Middlesbrough old-boy Michael Ricketts do not represent the greatest January signings in Premier League history but in a new financial climate in 2009 there will be no margin for error.

From 1st January bosses will again be able to wield their chequebooks and the excitement is growing as fans hope their clubs will produce New Year arrivals to match the likes of Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor or Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic, as opposed to Kromkamp and company.

Gossip and rumour has been fully available since the summer window sensationally slammed shut on 1st September as Dimitar Berbatov joined domestic and European champions United on deadline day, and Brazilian star Robinho swapped the Bernabeu for the City of Manchester Stadium in a British-record 32million deal.

But the bank will have a say in January, four months is a long time in football. Every monetary market in the world has been hit by the current economic crisis. Premier League clubs are feeling the pinch, adding a new dynamic to what could be the most intriguing transfer window since the ruling was introduced in 2002.

While Manchester City, financed by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, appear set for another big-money signing or two over the first 31 days of the final year of the Noughties, most top-flight clubs have been stressing the need for a frugal approach.

Even Chelsea, the 'rich boys' prior to the September arrival of Sheikh Mansour, now appear more Blankety Blank than Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Most in England's highest echelon have been forced to tighten their belts and will need to make every penny count. Loan deals could prove increasingly popular and recent managerial changes will see men wanting to make a mark.

The club to watch are, of course, Manchester City. Despite the crunch, Mark Hughes has money available and is well aware that players are needed to mould his side into the team of world-beaters his employer expects. AC Milan's Kaka, Valencia's David Villa and Real Madrid's Iker Casillas have all been linked and, with rivals likely to require greater persuasion to allow their star assets to leave, another statistic could be broken.

The 'Big Four' are also likely to be in action. Liverpool will want to strengthen as they attempt to end their aching wait for league success, but question marks exist over the commitment of American duo George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

Speculation connecting Chelsea striker Didier Drogba with Inter Milan will not go away and chief executive Peter Kenyon has suggested that funds need to be raised for new arrivals. Luiz Felipe Scolari could be required to sell before he can buy.

United will not want to surrender their Premier League and UEFA Champions League crowns without a fight and reinforcements are likely, despite claims to the contrary from Sir Alex Ferguson. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal - ranked the third most valuable club in the world by Forbes in April - will abandon youth policy in order to secure the, unquestionably necessary, reinforcements required for an inexperienced squad.

Aston Villa are hoping to gatecrash the Champions League places and have the future threat of City to consider. It will be curious to see where Martin O'Neill, who is always backed by majority shareholder Randy Lerner, opts to bolster.

Hull City have surpassed all expectations in their debut Premier League campaign and the Tigers continue to threaten the top five. January signings could offer a measure of ambition at KC Stadium. Is Europe a realistic target or will Phil Brown consolidate?

At the other end of the table, there is also likely to be action as clubs attempt to beat the drop. West Brom are flailing on their return as Championship winners and Tony Mowbray may look to add a bit of bite to his side's aesthetic style.

It will be interesting to see how Sam Allardyce operates on a reported shoestring budget at Blackburn following his December appointment, while new Sunderland boss Ricky Sbragia will hope to conduct some business.

The Black Cats' North-East neighbours Newcastle are also an intriguing case as it remains to be seen how owner Mike Ashley, who has cancelled plans to sell the club, will back temporary instalment Joe Kinnear. Hopes will be high at St James' Park that striker Michael Owen, whose current contract expires at the end of the term, will not be tempted away from Tyneside.

Portsmouth are a similar case to the Magpies as it would appear unlikely want-away Alexandre Gaydamak will be willing to back under-pressure Tony Adams, despite a probable 20m windfall from the sale of Lassana Diarra, as he attempts to alter a squad inherited from Harry Redknapp, who will no doubt be wheeling and dealing in an attempt to drag Tottenham up the table.

West Ham's Gianfranco Zola has made an unimpressive start to his first top job at club level and he will be well aware that new arrivals could make or break his career at Upton Park. But Icelandic businessman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson is looking to up sticks following the collapse of his empire in the critical worldwide fiscal situation, suggesting money could be in short supply.

Everton would view anything below a previous fifth-placed finish as a failure, but David Moyes' attacking options have been crippled by injuries and a striker - 18million Manchester City flop Jo has been mentioned - is a certainty.

Gareth Southgate is chasing a top-seven finish at Middlesbrough, where chairman Steve Gibson is never afraid to offer funds, and is also likely to bolster his forward-line following the disappointment of Afonso Alves.

After narrowly avoiding the drop in 2007/08, Roy Hodgson has worked wonders at Fulham and expect another couple of shrewd arrivals to match last year's acquisition of defender Brede Hangeland. Bolton, who were similarly tipped to struggle, will also look for a few new faces to ensure safety.

It will be interesting to see if newly-promoted Stoke choose to add creativity or further muscle, while Wigan's main priority will be to hang on to Emile Heskey and loan striker Amir Zaki.

The Latics insist Zaki is tied to the JJB Stadium until the end of the season but Real Madrid and Chelsea rumours persist, while Heskey is out of contract in July and is also thought to be on the shopping list at Stamford Bridge, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Tottenham, making a January deal a distinct possibility.

Super Taylor stuns Stompe

Phil Taylor produced a quarter-final masterclass to send Co Stompe crashing out of the PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace.

The 13-time champion was at his phenomenal best to thump the Dutchman 5-0, Stompe - who had beaten Taylor in Germany last month - picking up just three legs as 'The Power' stormed into the last four.

Taylor, who hit five 180s in the match, cruised through the first set courtesy of some very heavy scoring, but Stompe battled back in the second, forcing him to a fifth leg which he won after nailing double top.

Taylor's average of over 108 was simply irresistable and although the recent BDO defector was not playing at all badly there was little he could do to stop the former champion.

It was business as usual in the third as Taylor coasted it 3-0, bombarding the treble 20 time and again while rarely missing his doubles, leaving Stompe grinning widely at the absurdity of Taylor's brilliance.

Whitlock wants more

Simon Whitlock cruised into the second round of the BDO World Championships at Lakeside on Saturday and immediately stated his intention of taking this year's title.

The Australian lost to Welshman Mark Webster in the final 12 months ago and started his quest to go one better with a 3-0 victory over debutant Mark Barilli.

Whitlock told www.lakesideworlddarts.com: "I feel a lot more confident this year after finishing runner-up last year but hope this week to go one better.

"I learn every time I go up on stage - Lakeside is definitely the place to be."

But the going was tougher for top seed Gary Anderson, who just managed to squeeze past Norway's Robert Wagner 3-2.

The Scot, who has lost in the opening round no fewer than five times, found himself 2-1 behind but upped his game at just the right moment to edge through.

Anderson will now play Robert Hughes, the Welsh qualifier causing the first upset of the tournament by beating Australian 16th seed Eddy Sims 3-2.

Sims went 2-1 ahead but his fellow debutant battled back to win, and said: "I really enjoyed that match, in fact it was fantastic and I know I have another chance to go back and play on the Lakeside stage.

"I can play much better and hope I can bring my true form to the stage for my second-round match with Gary."

Meanwhile, ninth seed Tony O'Shea dispatched Sweden's Daniel Larsson 3-0 while fellow Englishman Darryl Fitton, the fifth seed, was an equally emphatic winner over Wales' Mark Salmon.

In the final match of the day, Dutch eighth seed Edwin Max was a 3-2 victor over debutant Krzysztof Ratajski from Poland.

Black Caps looking confident

Brendon McCullum says New Zealand are growing in confidence and hoping to start seeing positive results after a summer of frustration, as they take on the West Indies in the second ODI in Christchurch.

The weather has hit the series between the two sides, and up to now the two Tests were drawn while they both won one Twenty20 each.

The Black Caps were on top during the first one-day in Queenstown before the rain came again to frustrate the home side.

The Windies were on 129-5 and skipper Chirs Gayle admitted they were struggling before the weather intervened, but the start made by the hosts has given them confidence.brendon mccullum

Aussies in charge in Sydney

Third Test Match
Sydney
Australia 445 (M J Clarke 138, M G Johnson 64) & 33-0 v South Africa 327 (M V Boucher 89, H M Amla 51, P M Siddle 5-59)

Australia bossed the third day's play in the final Test to claim a 151-run lead with all second innings wickets intact against South Africa.

Seamer Peter Siddle bagged five for 59 including four wickets in 22 balls after tea to have the Proteas all out for 327, with injured opener Graeme Smith unable to return to the crease, before the Aussies reached 33-0 at stumps.

Replying to Australia's 445, the tourists were toiling at 195 for five before a partnership of 115 between Mark Boucher and Morne Morkel gave South Africa some respectability.

But Siddle skittled both and also removed Dale Steyn and Paul Harris cheaply to give the Aussies the upper hand as they bid to start 2009 on the right note.

Resuming on 125 for one the tourists were effectively five down before lunch with Smith out with a broken hand.

Halifax floor young Giants

An inexperienced Huddersfield side failed to claim the Infirmary Cup as they were beaten 32-18 by Halifax at the Shay.

The Giants were in front 18-16 at the break but did not manage to score a single point in the second half against their Championship opponents.

With new coach Nathan Brown watching on from the stands, some of the Super League outfit's rising stars were given a chance to impress.

And despite the defeat there were some positives to come out of the game for Huddersfield, not least a try on debut from Greg McNally.

The 18-year-old scrum-half marked his first appearance since signing from Whitehaven with one of the visitors' three scores in the opening 40 minutes.

Boxing review 2008

It was a year when the Hitman bounced back, the Golden Boy looked to have lost his shine and the Pac Man destroyed all before him.

While there's been plenty of talk, as you can always expect in the sport of boxing when hype sells tickets, there's also been plenty of superb bouts.

Ricky Hatton responded to suffering a first professional defeat with two wins and a change of trainer, Billy Graham making way for Floyd Mayweather Snr.

Next up for Britain's brightest boxing star could be a money-spinning showdown with Manny Pacquiao, who upset the odds with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Oscar De La Hoya.

Joe Calzaghe will spend the New Year considering whether to hang up the gloves after extending his perfect record to 46-0 with wins over modern day legends Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jnr.

Carl Froch would like to get a crack at the Pride of Wales after becoming a world champion, while David Haye has big plans for 2009 - he could jump the queue to fight Vitali Klitschko in the summer.

Sadly the year has not gone so smoothly for all of the Brits. Amir Khan saw his unbeaten start as a professional come to an end inside a minute at the very heavy hands of Colombian Breidis Prescott.

The past 12 months have once again provided plenty of highlights. Check out skysports.com's highs and lows of 2008 and share your thoughts on the past year using the feedback box below...

Diaz date for Marquez

Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz will meet head on in the new year.

The pair will battle it out for the latter's IBO belt and the unofficial tag of best lightweight in the world on February 28. The venue is yet to be confirmed.

Marquez, who was been named the Ring Magazine's champion when he stepped up to 135lbs to become the first man to stop colourful Cuban Joe Casamayor in September, had been touted as a possible opponent for Ricky Hatton or Manny Pacquiao.

But instead he will fight former undisputed lightweight champion Diaz in a Golden Boy Promotions bill-topper.

"This fight between Marquez and Diaz will shake the lightweight division to its core and truly determine the best 135-pounder in the world," said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions.

"As a fan, I can't wait to see this fight."

Marquez, who has won world titles at featherweight and super-featherweight, fought twice last year, beating Casamayor and losing a narrow decision to pound-for-pound king Pacquiao.

His scalp would put Diaz back on the boxing map after he surrendered his IBF, WBA and WBO belts to veteran Nate Campbell in one of the surprises of 2008.

He has since out-pointed Michael Katsidis, and says Marquez's reputation does not scare him in the slightest.

"Juan Manuel is one of the greats in the game and it's an honour to fight him, but I will be victorious on February 28," he said.

Eagles reveals United dream

Chris Eagles has admitted that he would welcome the opportunity to rejoin Manchester United in the future.

The 23-year-old left Old Trafford over the summer after growing disillusioned at a lack of first-team football with the reigning Premier League champions.

He took a step down to join Championship side Burnley, but has displayed his class with a number of impressive showings for Owen Coyle's men.

Eagles has not given up hope, though, of one day gracing the Theatre of Dreams once more, and is aware that Sir Alex Ferguson remains a staunch admirer of his considerable talent.

"I'm not going to hold a grudge because I thank him (Ferguson) for everything he's done. He's got me to where I am today and I have learned so much from him," Eagles said in the Daily Star Sunday.

"You have got to have a basic talent but he adds to it. He didn't want me to go. It was sort of on my own back and he fully understood.

Serbian duo hoping to shine

Manchester United's latest recruits Zoran Tosic and Adem Ljajic believe they have the ability to be a success in England.

The pair signed for the reigning Premier League champions last week, representing Sir Alex Ferguson's first foray into the January transfer window.

The duo could end up costing the Red Devils a combined 17million, a price tag which suggests they have a lot to live up to.

However, Tosic, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence since starring for Serbia at the 2007 European U21 Championship, believes he is capable of living up to his billing.

Opportunity

"At the beginning it was a dream to play somewhere like United but now it is a reality, one I am very happy with," he told Uefa's official website.

"I want to become a top player at United and not waste the opportunity of being a member of the greatest football family.

"It is great feeling, but now I must think about working hard.

"The presence of Nemanja Vidic will be a great help as I know him from the national team. I am full of confidence, will learn quickly and hope United can count on me very soon."

Bulls seal Hewson deal

Manchester United youngster Sam Hewson has joined Hereford on a three-month loan deal.

The 20-year-old is a talented midfielder with an eye for goal and Bulls boss Graham Turner will be hoping to utilise his creative abilities over the coming weeks.

Hewson has been a regular at academy and reserve level for United over the last few years and was awarded a first-team squad number this season.

However, despite being held in high regard at one of the world's biggest clubs, he is under no illusions as to just how tough a task he faces if he is to force his way into contention at Edgar Street.

"First of all I've got to fight for my place, hopefully show what I can do and if the manager thinks I'm good enough he'll put me in the team," Hewson told the club's official website.

Meanwhile, Josh Gowling and Andy Williams have extended their loan deals with the Bulls.

Gowling's move from Carlisle will last for a further month, while Bristol Rovers will allow Williams to remain with their League One rivals until the end of the season.

Elsewhere, Moses Ashikodi has returned to Watford after his short-term deal came to an end.sam hewson

United check on Feghouli

Manchester United are reported to have sent scouts to watch French starlet Sofiane Feghouli in action.

The 19-year-old Grenoble playmaker is attracting interest from across Europe, with United the latest to join a long line of admirers.

The France U21 international is expected to spend another year in his homeland as he continues his learning curve in professional football, but is likely to be available in the summer of 2010.

By then the talented teenager will have become a free agent and admits that he would be willing to consider a new challenge elsewhere.

"We will take stock at the end of the season. I don't know what I will do yet," he said in Le 10 Sport.

United scouts are said to have overseen Feghouli in Coupe de France action against Raon-L'Etape last weekend.

However, the Red Devils have yet to make an approach to Grenoble and would likely face competition from Hull City, Ajax, Fiorentina, Lille and Marseille if they

Giggs drops retirement hint

Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs admits his glittering career could come to an end in May.

The Red Devils midfielder is set to see his current contract at Old Trafford reach its conclusion at the climax of the 2008/09 campaign.

With no new terms on the table the Welshman admits that, after 19 years of loyal service to the reigning Premier League champions, he may be forced to hang up his boots.

"I will keep playing as long as I enjoy it, I am fit and the manager wants me," Giggs told The Sun.

"If one of those three things stops, I will consider retiring.

"It could be at the end of this season. Or it could be the next one. I am at the end of my contract in May, so we will see. At the minute, there hasn't been any contact with United.

"I am as fit as I have ever been. The only difference is recovering from games.

"Two days after a game, I am still tired. Before, I could play Saturday-Wednesday, Saturday-Wednesday no problem.

"Today, I would be a lot less efficient at doing things. Nowadays, I only play once a week, it's very good that way."

Mauresmo overcomes Dokic

Amelie Mauresmo was able to defeat Jelena Dokic in a tight first round encounter at the Brisbane International.

Mauresmo, a former world number one and winner of two Grand Slam singles titles, recovered from two set points to win the tiebreak in the first before taking another tiebreak in the second set.

This was the first chance for Mauresmo to apply any technique or tactical changes she has picked up from working with new coach Hugo Lecoq.

"It was a tough first match, she was playing some good tennis and gave me a bit of trouble. But there were good things." Mauresmo said.

"Physically I felt good on the court. That's a key point for me. I'm not at my top, but I'm feeling better than last year already. It's a matter of getting some wins to get the confidence back."

As an internationally-recognized tennis star, Anna Kournikova is one of today's leading female professional athletes. Anna's undeniable commitment to tennis and sportsmanship remain strong as she continues to expand her career and grow both personally and professionally.

Anna's illustrious tennis career has helped her transcend the sports industry and catapult her into the mainstream worlds of fashion, beauty, business, health and fitness. She is looked up to as a role-model, with her appeal and reputation extending far beyond the confines of the court.

Born in Moscow, Russia, Anna picked up her first tennis racquet at age five. She began hitting at Sokolniki Park and became a member of the prestigious Spartak Tennis Club, coached by Larissa Preobraschenskaja. In 1989, at the tender age of eight, Anna began appearing in junior tournaments, and by the following year, was attracting attention from tennis scouts across the world. Anna signed a management deal at age ten and went to Bradenton, Florida to train at Nick Bolletierri's celebrated tennis academy.

Following her arrival in the United States, Anna exploded onto the tennis scene, making her the internationally recognized tennis star she is today. At age 14, she became the youngest player ever to win a Fed Cup match. She then went on to win the European Championships and the Italian Open Junior tournament. Anna also beat out the competition to win the prestigious Junior Orange Bowl, becoming the youngest player ever to win the 18 and under division at that tournament. By the end of the year, Anna was crowned the ITF World Champion.

After her success in the juniors, Anna turned pro in 1995. She won two ITF singles tournaments, the 1st in Midland, Michigan, and the 2nd in Rockford, Illinois. Anna then battled through four qualifying rounds at the U.S. Open to eventually reach the fourth round of the main draw in her first-ever Grand Slam Tournament where she lost to Steffi Graff. At the end of 1996, Anna was the recipient of the prestigious Sanex WTA Tour Most Impressive Newcomer Award.

In 1997, Anna reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon and became the 2nd woman in the Open Era, next to Chris Evert, to reach the Wimbledon Semi's in her career debut. A year later, Anna broke into the world's top 20 at #16. At The Lipton Championships in Key Biscayne, Florida, Anna defeated four consecutive top 10 players in a four day period during a single tournament, an unprecedented achievement that no other female tennis player has accomplished to date. Three months later, she beat Steffi Graff on grass, a feat only two other players accomplished in the 90's. That same week, Anna broke in to the top 10 for the first time in her career. At the end of 1998, Anna finished the year at #13 in the world in singles and #10 in doubles. Her career continued to bloom during the next two years, with a year end ranking of #12 in singles and #1 in doubles in 1999, and #8 in singles and #4 in doubles in 2000.

Anna has defeated many of the top players who have competed on the women's tour, including Lindsay Davenport, Steffi Graff, Monica Seles, Jennifer Capriati, and Martina Hingis. These impressive wins, along with Anna's consistent top 10 rankings, two Grand Slam doubles titles at the 1999 and 2002 Australian Open, and 3 Grand Slam Mixed Doubles Finals, have more than proven her ability to excel in both singles and doubles on the WTA Tour.

Anna's accomplishments on the court have transcended off the court, making her one of the most recognized athletes in the world and a respected member of the sports community. In addition to her affiliations with K-Swiss and Yonex, Kournikova is an active supporter of the Boys and Girls Club.

Valuev ends Holyfield hopes

WBA champion Nikolai Valuev claimed a majority points decision to end Evander Holyfield's hopes of becoming the oldest ever title-holder.

Holyfield put up a brave display and ensured those who had predicted an entirely one-sided contest were proved utterly wrong.

The 46-year-old, who was always the busier of the two fighters, used his greater mobility to cause the 7ft Russian problems and was awarded a draw by one of the three judges at ringside.

However, Valuev was given victory by scores of 116-112 and 115-114 by the other two to ensure he retained his title.

Holyfield, who entered the ring some 44 kilos lighter, as well as 11 years older, than his opponent enjoyed the support of the crowd present in Zurich.

Valuev fought at long-range for the most part with some solid but unspectacular jabs.

The Russian failed to land with any really big shots, troubling Holyfield only a couple of times with glancing blows.

But while no doubting the veteran American's heart, he struggled to truly impose himself on his giant opponent and Valuev dealt with his attacks, seeing out victory despite Holyfield's desperate late efforts.

"I saw it the other way from the judges but I'm not disappointed by my performance," Holyfield said afterwards.

A marker for Murray

The Scot is one of six players taking part in the Capitala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi at the start of a year that could well bring his first grand slam title.

Murray will line up alongside Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at the three-day exhibition tournament so there should be some great tennis on show.

Any time you get the best guys in the world together you can expect an impressive event, whether they are competing for ranking points or pre-tournament pride.

Each player in the field - including Nikolay Davydenko, Andy Roddick and James Blake - will want to win it and gain a psychological edge in the build up to the Australian Open.

The single-elimination tournament should give a good indication of where each guy is in terms of their off-season training. I don't expect anyone to play their best tennis this early in the year but it will be a good test for them to face each other.

The 21-year-old, who is closing in on second-placed Roger Federer in the world rankings, scored his breakthrough success at Melbourne in 2008.

As he warms up for the year's first Grand Slam at the inaugural Brisbane International, Djokovic is in buoyant mood.

"It's always nice to come back to the country where you did well the previous year," he said.

"I take the best memories of my career out of Melbourne last year and I really look forward to going back there.

"Of course there is going to be a certain amount of expectation and pressure obviously as the Grand Slam champion, but I will try to use it in my favour and look at it as a positive challenge."novak djokovic January 2009

Jankovic out to stay on top

The Serbian begins the new season at the World Team Challenge in Hong Kong ahead of the Australian Open at the end of January.

A Grand Slam win is the one thing that has eluded Jankovic so far in her career. She came closest to breaking her duck in the US Open before losing in the final.

Now the 23-year-old is determined to go one better this year after a tough build-up that included high-altitude training in Mexico.

WELCOME TO OLD TRAFFORD

People often ask me what it is that makes Manchester United so special. When I played for the club Sir Matt Busby always used to say that the lad who works on the factory shop floor, but finds it boring, wants excitement in his free time... that when he goes to football at the weekend he wants excitement. He therefore used to tell us that we therefore had a responsibility to entertain. It is a philosophy that has continued right through until today and that has made the club popular the world over.

In my role as a club director I'm lucky enough to travel all over the world as a club ambassador. I've seen how much the club means to its supporters; it's an enduring appeal based on rich traditions and a unique history that encompasses excitement, tragedy and glory.

During this virtual tour you'll get a taste of the history of Manchester United, and move a little closer to understanding just why the club has touched the hearts of so many. Enjoy your visit.

Congratulations Cristiano. How does it feel to have won the award and become only the fourth United player ever to do so?
It feels amazing. It’s the award I always dreamt of winning when I was a kid and I feel very proud and very happy. I have to say a big thank you to my team-mates and everyone at the club who has helped me win the award – it has such a great history and it is the great players who win it so it’s magnificent to be alongside them. It’s amazing that only three players in the club’s history before me have won it. I didn’t know that until yesterday. So it’s special for the club and obviously for me and I feel very proud to be part of the history of the Ballon d’Or and the history of this club. You work hard to win team awards and personal awar

Papers: One last Gigg?

Ryan Giggs has stunned Manchester United by hinting he could retire at the end of the season. The veteran winger’s current deal expires in May and he is yet to be offered a new deal to stay at Old Trafford. Giggs’ experience has been vital for the Red Devils but the Welsh ace, 35, said: “I will keep playing as long as I enjoy it, I am fit and the manager wants me. If one of those three things stops, I will consider retiring. It could be at the end of this season. Or it could be the next one. I am at the end of my contract in May, so we will see. At the minute, there hasn’t been any contact with United. I am as fit as I have ever been. The only difference is recovering from games. Two days after a game, I am still tired. Before, I could play Saturday-Wednesday, Saturday-Wednesday no problem. Today, I would be a lot less efficient at doing things. Nowadays, I only play once a week, it’s very good that way."
Steve Brenner, The Sun

Meanwhile, following yesterday's exclusive that Carlos Tevez is happy to sign a permanent deal at United, The Sun today backtrack and claim that the Argentine striker could be tempted by a permanent move to Real Madrid. The Daily Mail even suggests that cash-rich Manchester City could swoop for a high-profile transfer coup.

The Mail also pick up on Sir Alex Ferguson's comments on the title race in issue 199 of Inside United. On Liverpool, the Boss says: "There's no doubt in the second half of the season they will get nervous. They are going into the unknown and, at this stage, if you make mistakes you get punished."

Ahead of United's Champions League clash with Internazionale next month, Jose Mourinho is set to attend this weekend's clash between the Reds and his former club Chelsea, according to The Sun.

Round up by Steve Bartram

Boss pleased by goal return

The Reds eased to victory at St. Mary's thanks to goals from Danny Welbeck, Nani and Darron Gibson and booked their place in the fourth round where they will take on Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

It was the first time United had scored more than one goal in a domestic fixture since the 5-3 win over Blackburn in the Carling Cup at the beginning of December. And Sir Alex was pleased to see Gibson add his name to an ever-growing list of goalscorers.

"It's our best scoreline for quite a while," the boss told MUTV. "We've been missing too many chances, but at least we took a better percentage of them against Southampton.

"It was good to see Darron get off the mark. There's been a good spread of goals throughout the squad this season - that's 14 different players who have scored this season which is healthy."

Southampton were the architects of their own downfall after Matthew Paterson was dismissed for a rash challenge on Nemanja Vidic and David McGoldrick gave away a penalty after he was adjudged to have handled in the area.

While Sir Alex felt the red card for Paterson was warranted, the United boss was less convinced about his side's second half spot-kick.

"I can't make up my mind about the penalty," he admitted. "I know he put his arm up and that's obviously why the referee gave it, but it may have actually glanced

O'Shea: Defence is key at Derby

The English and European champions haven't given away a single goal since returning with the world crown from Japan, to the delight of fans at Old Trafford against Middlesbrough and the dismay of the majorities at Stoke and Southampton.

O'Shea is now targeting a fourth consecutive clean sheet on English soil, at Derby on Wednesday, to give United a great platform for reaching the Carling Cup final.

"Keeping a clean sheet is always positive. That's the base for winning leagues and doing so well in cup competitions," O'Shea told MUTV.

"If the defence keeps clean sheets, then nine times out of ten it will result in a win for us because of the attacking talent we have."

Sunday's three goals at Southampton in the FA Cup was United's highest domestic tally since putting five past Blackburn in the previous round of the Carling Cup on 3 December.

"I suppose we could have been more ruthless in the second half at Southampton and scored a few goals," O'Shea added.

"We have been creating lots of chances which is a positive but obviously the next step is to make sure you hit the target and score the goal.

"That's probably the next step we have to improve on a small bit."

Edwin eyes Cup prize

“We could have done with an easier draw [than Tottenham Hotspur],” he told MUTV, “but at least we’re at home. The home support means we have a good opportunity to progress to the next round.

“I want to win the FA Cup and hopefully that will happen this year – my time is running out!”

Van der Sar was the Reds’ least busy player at St Mary’s, as United dominated the third round clash against Southampton. The goalkeeper’s role was more akin to a spectator, particularly after the home side was reduced to 10 men in the 36th minute.

But while the Reds thoroughly outplayed the hosts, van der Sar also acknowledged United had plenty of good fortune at St Mary’s.

“We had a bit of luck with the first goal,” he said. “It came back off the crossbar and Danny [Welbeck] was in the right place to score.

“Then we got the sending off and perhaps that was a little harsh, although I haven’t seen a replay yet. But I believe his leg was off the ground when it hit Vidic.

Pessotto: «A great performance in a difficult stadium»

Juventus team manager Gianluca Pessooto could not hold back his satisfaction following the well-deserved victory against Atalanta in Bergamo.

«The team gave a great performance in a difficult stadium against a team which never gave up. We ended a very positive cycle with a great match. Every match is important if you want to reach your goals. The team played well even when they scored their goal, never letting go.»

Asked whether he will be thinking of Chelsea during the holidays, Pesso replied: «The best way to approach Chelsea is going on in this manner, thinking of one opponent at a time.

Ranieri: «Three well deserved and hard-earned points»

Claudio Ranieri applauded his team as they exited the dressing rooms of the Bergamo stadium, a field which he feared a lot and from which Juventus managed to bring home three well-deserved points: «It was a well deserved and hard-earned victory – confirmed the coach – I could have imagined that it wouldn’t have been easy away to Atalanta, seeing that they had obtained 19 of the 24 points they won in front of their fans. Del Neri’s team made us tremble. The second half was well fought with none of the teams wanting to give up and at the end we got the best out of it».

Ranieri reveals a few moves and worries: «When I moved Del Piero to the left I did so because I saw we were having some problems in that area. Placing him in that position they would either choose to remain in their half of the field or open up a passage for us. Vieri? I told them in the dressing rooms that they would have to be careful with him. The first time they managed to stop him, the second unfortunately they didn’t but it is not our shortcoming but the merit goes to the player who is capable of champion moves.»

The last thought is reserved for Amauri: «He is doing really well and thanks to him we are not missing Trezeguet. To elaborate a bit, it was my objective to have a photocopy of the team in the sense that I wanted two similar players in each role to be able to compete on all fronts and have the possibility of choosing the best , fielding the players who are most in form.»

Molinaro: «On with this determination»

Cristian Molinaro comments the victory in Bergamo in this manner: «It wasn’t easy, in fact it was difficult because they played well. In the first ten minutes of the first and second halves they managed to create problems for us but luckily we managed to open the score and then maintain the result».

With regards to the quest for the top spot Molinaro declared: «We have to play like we did today, except for the first ten minutes. With the right determination we know we can beat anyone and this is the spring that should push us to try and catch-up with the table leaders».

Amauri: «An important victory

Fresh off the field Amauri commented the victory in this manner: «We managed to bring home an important victory. Let’s hope that 2009 will be even better than 2008. We know that Inter is 6 points ahead of us, it is a strong team and they win when they don’t play well but we are still there. We must not relax and then we’ll see what happens.»

Amauri is satisfied not only with the result and yet another goal but also by the way the first part of his first season at Juventus is fairing: «For me it is important to end 2008 in this manner. It is not easy to arrive in a big club and do well immediately. This is also thanks to my team-mates, a group that put me in the right conditions to get accustomed and a team that helped me to score all these goals.»
